Vintage Quimper artist signed plate with the unusual subject of a man smoking a clay pipe. Made in France around 1940 and is signed on the back, Henriot Quimper and then the initials "LM" shops, the artist. The plate depicts a man in the usual Breton clothing outfit of a hat with streamers. The plate has a scalloped design and there is a dark orange line painted on the edge to highlight the border. This dinner plate measures 8 1/4 inches in diameter. It is in very good, used condition with no crazing, cracks or repairs. The only defect I can find is a small "dimple" in the glaze near the rim that probably occurred when the plate was fired in the kiln.
